U.S. Women Dominate Canada 10-4, Nears Rivalry Series Sweep
The United States women’s hockey team achieved a commanding victory over Canada, winning 10-4 in the third game of the Rivalry Series held in Edmonton, Alberta, on Wednesday night. This victory marks the U.S. team’s third consecutive win in the four-game series, bringing them one step closer to a sweep.
Kelly Pannek and Abbey Murphy each contributed significantly to the scoreline, netting two goals apiece. Additionally, Kendall Coyne Schofield registered one goal and two assists, while Tessa Janecke, Jesse Compher, Britta Curl-Salemme, Alex Carpenter, and Kirsten Simms also found the back of the net for the U.S. The Americans responded strongly after conceding an early goal, scoring five unanswered goals following Canada’s quick strike.
Canada’s Sarah Fillier opened the scoring just 48 seconds into the match, but the U.S. quickly took control, showcasing their offensive prowess. Gwyneth Philips, the U.S. goaltender, made 30 saves, helping to solidify the team’s lead as they outscored Canada significantly.
Canada Struggles to Maintain Momentum
The defeat marked a historic moment for Canada, as it was the first time they allowed ten goals in a match, surpassing their previous high of nine goals conceded in 2012. Despite strong individual performances, including two goals from Sophie Jaques and a goal with an assist from Fillier, Canada struggled defensively throughout the game.
Goaltender Ann-Renée Desbiens faced challenges early on, allowing five goals on 17 shots before being replaced by Emerance Maschmeyer midway through the second period. Maschmeyer managed to stop 7 of 12 shots in her time on the ice.
The hosts showed resilience, attempting to rally back with a three-goal second period, which included two goals scored in the final two minutes. Jaques’ second goal of the game withstood a video review for goaltender interference, keeping Canada’s hopes alive as they entered the third period just two goals down.
Looking Ahead to the Series Finale
As the final game of the Rivalry Series approaches on Saturday in Edmonton, the U.S. remains in a dominant position. The Americans previously won the first two games of the series, claiming victories of 4-1 in Cleveland and 6-1 in Buffalo, New York, during November.
In this latest matchup, the U.S. capitalized on Canada’s defensive lapses, which allowed opposing players to operate freely in their zone. As the game progressed, the U.S. regained their scoring momentum, netting four unanswered goals to secure their win.
Canada, the reigning Olympic gold medalists, will aim to regroup and adjust their strategies ahead of their final meeting before the February Olympic Games. The outcome of this series is crucial for both teams as they prepare for the upcoming international competition.
