UConn Football Clinches Bowl Eligibility with 38-19 Victory

The University of Connecticut (UConn) football team secured its bowl eligibility for the third time in four years with a commanding 38-19 victory over the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) on November 4, 2025. The Huskies’ sixth win of the season showcased a significant turnaround following a disappointing loss against Rice, highlighting their determination to compete at a higher level.

UConn’s performance at Rentschler Field was marked by standout contributions from players such as Skyler Bell, who caught three touchdown passes, and Cam Chadwick, who recorded three interceptions. Bell expressed the importance of the victory, stating, “UConn just reminded me that win was bowl eligibility. In 2022, under Mora’s leadership, UConn celebrated their sixth win with great enthusiasm, culminating in a local bowling outing. Last season, they achieved an 8-4 record, marking their first winning season in a decade.

The atmosphere at Rentschler Field during Saturday’s game, while lively, did not reflect the enthusiasm of previous seasons. Approximately 23,170 tickets were distributed, but attendance fell short, particularly in the student section. The timing of the game, following several overtime losses against strong opponents, may have impacted turnout. UConn’s earlier victories, including a significant win against Boston College on October 18, lost some luster after the setback against Rice.

Looking ahead, UConn faces a critical matchup against Duke, a team that has historically been a rival. Mora highlighted the significance of this game, stating, “We have a huge game coming up on Saturday against an ACC opponent in Duke. They’ve beaten us twice since we’ve been here, so I don’t think it’s going to be hard to get our guys focused on the task at hand.”

Despite the challenges of their independent schedule, UConn aims to secure a more prestigious bowl game than last season. The definition of a “better” bowl game may vary among players, with factors such as timing, location, and opponent strength playing a role. Bell noted, “I don’t like to look at that stuff… I just go out there and pray for a warm bowl.”

Current projections for UConn’s bowl prospects are varied, as bowl game invitations can be influenced by numerous factors. One scenario suggested by College Football News includes a potential matchup against Clemson in the Fenway Bowl, while others propose games against Memphis or Kansas.

To enhance their bowl game prospects, UConn must continue to build on their recent success. Following the Duke game, they will face Air Force and Florida Atlantic. Mora expressed pride in his team’s resilience, stating, “I was proud of the team, the way they responded from the disappointing loss in overtime on the road. Those are heartbreakers, and you’re always anxious to see how guys are going to respond.”
