Vanderbilt Football Faces Iowa with Minimal Opt-Outs in ReliaQuest Bowl

Vanderbilt football is set to compete in the ReliaQuest Bowl against Iowa on December 31, 2025, with the team maintaining a nearly full roster. Tight end Eli Stowers is the only notable player opting out to prepare for the NFL Draft, ensuring he remains healthy in the lead-up to his professional career. In a contrast to many teams facing significant player departures, Vanderbilt will field a strong lineup, bolstered by several players who plan to transfer yet will still participate in the bowl game.

The 12th-ranked Commodores, boasting a record of 10-2, will face Iowa, which has an 8-4 record, at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. The game is scheduled to kick off at 11 a.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPN.

Vanderbilt’s head coach, Clark Lea, has expressed his support for players who wish to transfer, allowing them to complete their commitments to the team. This approach has become a hallmark for the Commodores, as they navigate the complexities of college football’s transfer portal while aiming for bowl game success.

While two backup quarterbacks, Drew Dickey and Jeremy St-Hilaire, have both announced their intentions to enter the transfer portal, they will not participate in the bowl. Both players have been sidelined due to injuries sustained during the latter part of the season. Additionally, Duncan MacDonald has indicated plans to transfer, although he has not been part of the active roster this season.

As for players who will still compete in the ReliaQuest Bowl despite their transfer plans, several key names have emerged.

Cooper Starks, an offensive lineman who has appeared in nine games this season, will play in the bowl game. A spokesperson from the Vanderbilt program confirmed that Starks remains committed to contributing in this final matchup.

Another offensive lineman, Misael Sandoval, plans to play as well. Sandoval has participated in four games throughout the season and aims to make an impact in the bowl game.

Edge rusher Jailen Ruth is also set to compete. He has been active in 12 games this season, registering two tackles, and aims to add to his contributions as the Commodores take on Iowa.
