15-Year-Old Girl Dies in East Oakland Crash; Teen Driver Arrested

UPDATE: A tragic car crash in East Oakland has resulted in the death of a 15-year-old girl and left three other juveniles hospitalized. This devastating incident occurred around 9:40 a.m. on July 15, 2023, when a Toyota Corolla carrying five girls was involved in two back-to-back collisions.

According to authorities, the 16-year-old male driver of the Corolla fled the scene after an initial collision near the intersection of 14th Avenue and East 31st Street. Following the crash, the driver of the other vehicle pursued the Corolla and contacted police with crucial details about the incident.

The suspect merged onto Interstate 580 but exited onto 35th Avenue, where he drove at a dangerously high speed. At an intersection in the 3300 block of 35th Avenue, the Corolla was struck by a third vehicle, causing it to crash into a concrete wall.

Emergency responders rushed all occupants of the Corolla to local hospitals. Tragically, the 15-year-old girl, seated in the rear, succumbed to her injuries less than an hour later. The conditions of the other three girls remain unknown at this time. The suspect was also hospitalized in critical but stable condition before being taken into custody.
