Americans Skeptical of Trump’s Account in Alex Pretti Shooting
UPDATE: A new poll released today reveals that 61 percent of Americans doubt the Trump administration’s account of the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti by Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis last month. The Quinnipiac University survey highlights a growing skepticism surrounding the administration’s narrative, with only 25 percent of voters believing the official story.
This skepticism comes at a crucial moment, as the demand for transparency intensifies. A staggering 80 percent of respondents are calling for an independent investigation into Pretti’s death, while only 15 percent oppose further scrutiny. As public outcry mounts, voters assert, “We need more facts, and an independent investigation is the way to get them,” according to Tim Malloy, a polling analyst at Quinnipiac.
Strong partisan divides are evident in the poll results. Only 2 percent of Democrats and 20 percent of Independents express confidence in the administration’s account, while 19 percent of Republicans support it. The poll indicates that the controversy surrounding Pretti’s death resonates deeply with the electorate, reflecting broader concerns about immigration policy and law enforcement conduct.
In the aftermath of the shooting, officials from the Trump administration have faced backlash for their comments. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated, “any gun owner knows that when you are carrying a weapon… you are raising the assumption of risk.” Meanwhile, Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller initially described Pretti as an “assassin,” sparking outrage before he later retracted his statement as new details emerged.
Critics argue that the administration’s rhetoric exacerbates tensions and misrepresents the events leading to Pretti’s death. Videos reportedly show Pretti holding his phone, contradicting claims that he was “brandishing” a weapon. This discrepancy has become a focal point in the ongoing debate about law enforcement’s engagement with protestors.
The urgency for an independent investigation is underscored by the recent history of ICE-related shootings and the administration’s controversial immigration policies. Following Pretti’s death—just the latest in a series of incidents involving Border Patrol agents—advocates are demanding accountability and transparency. The poll’s findings suggest that many voters are increasingly concerned about the implications of such incidents on public safety and civil rights.
As the political landscape shifts, attention is now focused on the potential for a renewed investigation. With the public clamoring for answers, officials are urged to act swiftly. The fallout from Pretti’s death continues to unfold, and the demand for clarity is only growing.
