UPDATE: Starting December 15, 2023, Arizona prisons will transition from physical letters to digital mail for inmates, igniting concerns among families about the potential impact on mental health. The Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry (ADCRR) claims the move aims to enhance safety and reduce contraband, but families argue it could further isolate their loved ones.

In a heartfelt plea, a Valley woman shared her distress over the upcoming changes. She has maintained a close connection with her brother, who has been incarcerated for 13 years on a murder conviction. “There’s something truly special about receiving a piece of mail,” she explained, emphasizing how letters bring joy and hope to inmates.

As mail delivery changes, all general correspondence will be routed to a facility in Texas, where it will be scanned and sent to inmates via tablets or kiosks. This drastic decision stems from incidents where contraband, including drug-soaked paper, has infiltrated prison units. In November, four female inmates in Goodyear were hospitalized after consuming illegal substances.

Despite the rationale behind the shift, families demand greater transparency. “How many cases of drug incidents are there?” the woman questioned, urging officials to explore alternative solutions rather than restricting physical mail. “This change feels like a punishment for everyone, depriving inmates of cherished family photos and letters,” she lamented.

While legal mail, publications, and packages will continue to be delivered physically, the move to digital communication has been met with skepticism. Families are advocating for better methods to address contraband issues without sacrificing the emotional support provided by traditional mail.
