UPDATE: In a bold move that shakes up the MLS landscape, Austin FC has just announced the acquisition of winger Jayden Nelson from Vancouver Whitecaps FC in a significant trade finalized Thursday. The deal, valued at $1.25 million in general allocation money spread over two years, also includes Austin’s No. 17 pick in the 2026 MLS SuperDraft.

This trade comes on the heels of Vancouver’s impressive season, where they reached the MLS Cup but fell short against Miami earlier this month. The Whitecaps also secured second place in the Western Conference and were runners-up in the CONCACAF Champions Cup earlier this spring.

Nelson, just 23 years old, adds a potent offensive threat to Austin FC’s roster, which may be preparing for the departure of winger Osman Bukari. Last season, Nelson recorded three goals and 11 assists in 40 appearances, showcasing his ability to contribute significantly on the field. His experience spans multiple leagues; before joining the Whitecaps, he played three seasons with Toronto, and had stints in Norway’s top division and Germany’s second division.

The trade also sees Austin FC relinquishing $700,000 in allocation money in 2026 and $550,000 in 2027. Additionally, the Whitecaps will retain a sell-on clause for Nelson, ensuring they benefit from any future transfer.

In response to this trade, Vancouver quickly used the draft pick acquired from Austin to select Washington midfielder Zach Ramsey. Meanwhile, Austin FC opted for Akron forward Stefan Dobrijevic in the second round and Penn midfielder Patrick Cayelli in the third round of the draft, further shaping their roster.

This trade is poised to have an immediate impact on both teams and could alter the dynamics of the upcoming season. As Austin FC strengthens its squad, fans are eager to see how Nelson’s addition will influence their performance in the league moving forward. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
