Barbara Corcoran Reveals Secret to Marriage: Separate Bedrooms
UPDATE: Barbara Corcoran, the 76-year-old Shark Tank star, has just revealed a surprising secret to enhancing her marriage: sleeping in separate bedrooms. In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, Corcoran stated, “When I got my second bedroom, I immediately loved my husband twice as much.”
This revelation comes as more couples are exploring the concept of “sleep divorce,” a trend that allows partners to maintain space and improve their relationship dynamics. Corcoran, who has been married to retired Navy captain and FBI agent Bill Higgins since 1988, emphasizes that this arrangement has significantly benefited their marriage.
Corcoran explains that having her own space is crucial for her well-being. “I always wake up at 5 o’clock,” she shared. “I make myself some coffee, sit on my chair and daydream for an hour.” This morning routine helps her recharge before facing the day.
While she acknowledges that separate bedrooms won’t work for everyone, she encourages couples, especially those in New York City, to maximize their living spaces. “They could get separate beds. They could put a wall up. They could sleep on the convertible couch,” she suggested. Corcoran believes many couples waste potential in their homes by using spare rooms for activities other than rest.
She has previously discussed the benefits of separate bedrooms on The Jamie Kern Lima Show in December 2024, highlighting that her private space allows her to thrive in her busy life filled with family and friends. “I think there’s something to be said about your own private space,” she stated.
Furthermore, Corcoran and Higgins have established rules about entering each other’s bedrooms, stating, “I have to invite him into my bedroom, and I like it that way.” This mutual respect for boundaries appears to be a cornerstone of their enduring relationship.
Corcoran’s insights are resonating with others, as several celebrities have also endorsed the idea of sleeping separately. Notably, Carson Daly has referred to sleep divorce as the “best thing” for his marriage, while Bette Midler has shared that she and her husband have slept apart since the beginning of their relationship.
As discussions around sleep divorce gain traction, Corcoran’s perspective adds a fresh voice to the conversation, encouraging couples to consider the benefits of personal space in a partnership.
The question remains: will more couples embrace this unconventional approach to improve their relationships? As the trend of sleep divorce continues to develop, Corcoran’s advice may very well spark a movement towards healthier marital dynamics.
