BREAKING: The Chicago Blackhawks faced a crushing 3-2 shootout loss to the Vancouver Canucks on March 15, 2024, marking their 11th consecutive defeat against the hometown team of rising star Connor Bedard. This latest setback highlights a troubling trend as the Blackhawks now stand at 2-2-2 after six games this season.

The Blackhawks jumped out to a quick lead, scoring twice in the first period and dominating with a 13-5 advantage in scoring chances. However, the tide turned in the second period. A pivotal moment occurred when Tyler Bertuzzi’s potential game-winning goal was disallowed with just 5:12 left in regulation. Referee Kelly Sutherland ruled the goal invalid due to goaltender interference, claiming the puck was lodged under Canucks goalie Kevin Lankinen’s pad before Bertuzzi nudged it in.

Connor Murphy recounted Sutherland’s explanation, stating, “They looked at that as a dead puck even though the whistle still wasn’t blown.” The Blackhawks contested the call, believing it resembled other permitted goals. Coach Jeff Blashill expressed confidence in challenging the call again, saying he would do so “10 out of 10 times.” Bertuzzi added, “I think it was not that great of a call,” hinting at the players’ frustration with officiating.

Despite the disallowed goal, the Blackhawks managed to survive two Canucks power plays, including one following the failed challenge, to reach overtime. Goalie Spencer Knight showcased his skills with several critical saves. However, the Blackhawks fell short in the shootout, failing to score on four attempts before Brock Boeser clinched the victory for Vancouver.

“This game is a learning lesson,” Murphy said. “To not put together enough of a push to take a team’s will away — when you have them down against the ropes — is a big difference in winning and losing.” The players recognized the importance of capitalizing on opportunities to secure victories.

In an unexpected twist, Hawks forward Jason Dickinson did not engage in a fight despite anticipation following a previous incident with Canucks forward Kiefer Sherwood. Instead, Sherwood squared off with Bertuzzi. Dickinson briefly exited the game due to an upper-body injury, raising concerns about his condition.

The night also featured a surprising fight involving Hawks defenseman Louis Crevier, who faced Canadiens defenseman Kaiden Guhle. This marked Crevier’s first fight in the NHL and since third grade, an event he humorously reflected on. “It was great for Louis,” Blashill noted. “It shows he’s got that physicality and is going to bring more of that edge.”

As the Blackhawks navigate this challenging early season, they remain focused on improving. Bedard, despite not scoring, attempted seven shots and earned praise from Blashill for his competitive spirit and dedication to winning. “He wants to win more than anything else,” Blashill stated. “He’s 100% bought into it.”

Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely as the Blackhawks look to turn their fortunes around in the coming games. The team must address their inability to secure wins in critical moments if they hope to break the cycle of disappointment against the Canucks and regain their competitive edge in the league.
