Caleb Williams Throws Game-Tying TD, But Bears Fall in OT
UPDATE: In a dramatic NFC divisional playoff showdown, the Chicago Bears faced a heartbreaking 20-17 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Rams on January 18, 2026. Caleb Williams showcased his incredible talent, delivering a stunning game-tying touchdown only to falter in overtime with a costly interception.
With just 27 seconds left in regulation, Williams executed a breathtaking fourth-down pass from the Rams’ 14-yard line, connecting with tight end Cole Kmet to level the score. This remarkable play exemplified Williams’ ability to perform under pressure, igniting hopes of a miraculous comeback at Soldier Field.
However, the excitement was short-lived. In overtime, after a promising drive stalled at the Rams’ 48-yard line, Williams attempted a deep shot to DJ Moore. Rams safety Kam Curl intercepted the pass, sealing the Bears’ fate as the Rams marched down the field to score the game-winning field goal.
Williams ended his second professional season with a 1-1 postseason record, having previously led the Bears to a 31-27 victory over the Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round. His performance against the Rams was marked by frustration and disappointment, with Williams throwing three interceptions, a stark contrast to his earlier success.
In his postgame remarks, Williams expressed mixed emotions, saying, “It’s a frustration. It’s a fire. Those are the two words that I’d go with. I’m excited, though, also. Obviously, not happy about the outcome.” His determination to improve was evident as he prepared to analyze the game and learn from his mistakes.
The pivotal touchdown play highlighted Williams’ unique skill set. Under immense pressure from the Rams’ defense, he backpedaled to the 40-yard line and launched a perfectly timed pass to Kmet, who outmaneuvered defenders for the touchdown. Reflecting on the moment, Kmet stated, “It just felt like a pop fly in center field. It was kind of a pretty easy pitch and catch.”
Head Coach Ben Johnson praised Williams’ ability to make extraordinary plays, noting, “You talk about that fourth-and-8 from last week and how outstanding that was, and I think this one was probably even another level ahead of that.”
Despite the thrilling highlights, Williams faced scrutiny for his late-game mistakes. The interception, which came after a promising offensive series, was attributed to a miscommunication with Moore. Williams explained, “Just a miscommunication between him and I. Tried to flatten him off under the safety, and he kept it vertical.”
As the Bears look to the future, Williams’ performance in the postseason remains a topic of discussion. He completed 23 of 42 passes for 257 yards and two touchdowns on the night, marking a total of 618 passing yards and four touchdowns across both playoff games—second all-time in franchise history.
The Bears’ journey ends here, but the impact of Williams’ electrifying plays and the lessons learned from this tough loss may shape the team’s future. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how Williams evolves in the upcoming seasons, as he aims to elevate the Bears back to championship contention.
