Camden Hills Wins First-Ever State Football Championship, 52-26
UPDATE: Camden Hills has made history by clinching its first state football championship with a resounding 52-26 victory over Spruce Mountain on November 15, 2023, at Edward Little High School. The team, led by quarterback Hollis Schwalm, dominated the game, leaving no doubt about their superiority on the field.
The Windjammers entered the championship game with newfound motivation after seeing their team banner displayed in the school gym without any dates. “That needs to change,” Schwalm declared, and change it did as he delivered an unforgettable performance in his final game.
In a game defined by explosive plays and defensive prowess, Schwalm accounted for an astonishing 32 points directly, rushing for three touchdowns and passing for another. His offensive clinic included significant contributions from teammates like Braden Beveridge, who scored a touchdown and intercepted two passes, showcasing the team’s all-around strength.
Camden Hills stormed into the lead early, finishing the first quarter at 8-0 before extending it to 32-12 by halftime, bolstered by a flurry of touchdowns in the closing minutes of the second quarter. The Windjammers maintained their momentum, ultimately outscoring Spruce Mountain 20-6 in the second half.
Coach Chris Christie praised his team’s heart and determination, noting, “Some of those cuts Hollis made and some of those dives Braden made… they just weren’t going to be denied today.” The Windjammers ended their season with an impressive 10-1 record, while Spruce Mountain concluded its campaign at 8-2.
The victory marks a significant milestone for Camden Hills, a program that has faced challenges since its inception in 2009. After experiencing setbacks, including a canceled season in 2015 due to safety concerns, the Windjammers have finally found their footing in the eight-man division.
As the team celebrated on the field, Schwalm reflected on the journey: “This is the stuff you dream about since you’re six years old watching a high school football game.” The Windjammers will now have their names etched on the championship banner they sought to change, a testament to their hard work and teamwork.
What’s next for Camden Hills? With a solid mix of young talent, Coach Christie is optimistic about the future. “There were a lot of freshmen and sophomores out there playing today. The future looks pretty solid for us,” he stated.
This championship win not only brings glory to the Windjammers but also serves as an inspiring story for other teams facing adversity. The triumph is a celebration of resilience and teamwork, making it a moment to remember in the annals of high school sports.
