Cargo Plane Crash at Hong Kong Airport: 2 Dead, Investigation Underway
UPDATE: A tragic incident unfolds at Hong Kong International Airport as a cargo plane has crashed into the sea, resulting in the deaths of two security personnel. The accident occurred at approximately 3:50 a.m. local time on October 20, 2023, when the Boeing 747 veered off the runway upon landing.
Officials report that the aircraft lost control while landing on the north runway, colliding with a security patrol car and pushing it into the water. The Hong Kong airport authority confirmed that two security officers were in the vehicle at the time of the crash. One was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other succumbed to injuries at a nearby hospital.
During a press conference, Steven Yiu Siu-Chung, executive director for airport operations, stated that the patrol vehicle was located safely away from the runway prior to the incident. Yiu emphasized that the vehicle was “definitely not on the runway,” as it was on a designated patrol route around the airport’s northern coast.
Emergency response teams, comprising 213 firefighters and 45 emergency vehicles, were deployed immediately to the scene. Four crew members aboard the cargo plane were rescued and transported to the hospital, with their conditions currently unreported.
Visuals from the crash site depict significant damage, with the aircraft’s body in pieces and its tail section detached from the fuselage. The cargo plane had arrived from Al Maktoum International Airport, and officials are investigating the circumstances leading to this devastating event.
Despite the chaos, the Hong Kong airport authority has confirmed that operations at the south and center runways remain unaffected, with over 1,000 flights scheduled to continue without interruption. However, the north runway is currently closed while investigations are ongoing.
Emirates, the airline operating the cargo plane, has reported that all crew members are safe and noted that there was no cargo on board at the time of the crash. The company did not provide additional comments when reached for further information.
This incident marks a critical moment for aviation safety in Hong Kong, raising questions about operational protocols and emergency response effectiveness. As investigations proceed, authorities will closely examine the factors contributing to this tragic accident.
