Cargo Plane Crash at Hong Kong Airport: 2 Dead, Investigation Underway

The accident occurred at approximately 3:50 a.m. local time on October 20, 2023, when the Boeing 747 veered off the runway upon landing.

Officials report that the aircraft lost control while landing on the north runway, colliding with a security patrol car and pushing it into the water. The Hong Kong airport authority confirmed that two security officers were in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Emergency response teams, comprising 213 firefighters and 45 emergency vehicles, were deployed immediately to the scene. Four crew members aboard the cargo plane were rescued and transported to the hospital, with their conditions currently unreported.

Despite the chaos, the Hong Kong airport authority has confirmed that operations at the south and center runways remain unaffected, with over 1,000 flights scheduled to continue without interruption. However, the north runway is currently closed while investigations are ongoing.

Emirates, the airline operating the cargo plane, has reported that all crew members are safe and noted that there was no cargo on board at the time of the crash. The company did not provide additional comments when reached for further information.
