UPDATE: Carter and Love counties in Oklahoma have just implemented urgent burn bans, effective immediately, due to escalating fire risks. The bans come after a severe red-flag warning last week that indicated worsening fire conditions across the region.

Fire officials confirmed that the bans will prohibit all outdoor burning for at least the next week, with the potential for extension as conditions evolve. Criner Hills Fire Chief Michael Campbell stated, “Certain criteria must be met before a burn ban is issued,” highlighting the importance of the drought monitor and forecasts in determining fire safety.

While outdoor grilling and welding are still permitted, strict precautions are advised. “If you’re in a profession that’s known for producing sparks, take precautions,” said Campbell. Firefighters urge individuals to use protective measures such as putting down blankets and having pressurized water available during high-risk activities.

Prescribed burns may still occur, but only with prior approval and adherence to specific documentation as mandated by local fire regulations. Violators of the burn ban may face severe penalties, including a $500 fine or up to one year in jail. “If you’re burning during a burn ban and it gets out of control, you’re responsible,” warned Campbell.

The primary goal of the burn ban is to prevent wildfires from causing destruction, not to penalize residents. “Preventing fires from happening is the whole purpose of the burn ban,” Campbell emphasized.

Community members are encouraged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious outdoor burning activities. Fire officials are closely monitoring conditions and will keep the public informed on any changes to the ban.

Stay tuned for updates as the situation develops, and prioritize safety to protect both lives and property from potential wildfires.
