BREAKING NEWS: Chaitanya Gopi and Sunny Zhang have emerged as Cass County’s top spellers, securing their spots in the upcoming state competition next month in Bismarck. Gopi, a sixth grader from Dakota Montessori School, clinched victory at the annual Cass County Spelling Bee held on February 23, while seventh grader Zhang from Ben Franklin Middle School took second place.

The State Spelling Bee is set for March 23 at the Bismarck Event Center, where both students will compete for the title. With only two spots available for each county, Gopi and Zhang’s achievements are particularly noteworthy as they prepare to represent Cass County on a state level.

The competition featured 38 participants from nine schools across the county, showcasing the spelling prowess of young students. The event kicked off with a written round, whittling down the participants to the top 12 scorers. These finalists then faced off in a nail-biting spell-off to determine the two qualifiers for the state championship.

Emberly Wobbema, an eighth grader from Capstone Classical Academy, finished in third place, demonstrating the exceptional talent present at the bee. The stakes are high, as the ultimate winner of the state competition will earn the chance to represent North Dakota at the prestigious 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee in May.

The excitement surrounding the Cass County Spelling Bee highlights the dedication and hard work of these young spellers. Gopi and Zhang’s journey to the state competition not only reflects their individual talents but also inspires their peers to strive for excellence in academics.

As the countdown to the state competition begins, all eyes will be on Gopi and Zhang. Stay tuned for updates on their progress and the upcoming events leading to the state title. This is a remarkable opportunity for both students, and their communities are rallying behind them with support and encouragement.
