Chicago Mayor Johnson Warns of Potential Layoffs Amid Budget Crisis

UPDATE: Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has issued a stark warning that layoffs could occur as soon as mid-year due to a recently passed budget that he did not support. This development has ignited a fierce debate among City Council members, who are defending the alternative budget that led to this alarming situation.

On Wednesday, Johnson expressed deep concerns about the budget’s viability, particularly regarding revenue projections for video gaming. “I am bracing for what could be mid-year layoffs,” he stated, emphasizing that the financial forecasts provided by dissenting aldermen may not materialize as expected.

The mayor’s warning comes after the budget passed with 98.4 percent of his initial proposals but excluded the crucial corporate head tax that Johnson had fought for. He specifically highlighted the potential negative impact on community safety. “There could be serious consequences to workers who are attached to community safety,” he added.

In response, leaders from the alternative budget coalition refuted Johnson’s dire predictions. 39th Ward Ald. Samantha Nugent pointed out an impending lawsuit from sports betting companies contesting a new tax of more than 10 percent on their revenue, which could create a $26 million gap in the budget. Nugent stated, “We want to work with the administration on how we get that revenue.”

Other aldermen are downplaying the mayor’s warnings. 11th Ward Ald. Nicole Lee acknowledged the risks but called the fears “very premature.” She urged focus on starting the year positively rather than speculating on layoffs.

Johnson has previously raised alarms about public safety layoffs during budget deliberations, and he now faces pushback from the council, which argues that he is unnecessarily causing panic. The mayor remains hopeful that he can collaborate with City Council to prevent job losses. “I am continuously working with City Council… to ensure that you can mitigate that type of harm,” Johnson stated.
