UPDATE: Google has just released a critical update for Chrome, addressing a significant security vulnerability identified as CVE-2026-0628. This flaw, affecting versions 143.0.7499.192/193 for Windows, macOS, and 143.0.7499.192 for Linux, poses a high risk due to insufficient policy enforcement in the WebView component.

The urgency of this update cannot be overstated, as it comes just ahead of the next scheduled release on January 13, 2026. Although Google reports that this vulnerability has not yet been exploited in the wild, the potential for harm remains, making immediate updates essential for users.

According to the Chrome Releases blog, the vulnerability was reported by external researcher Gal Weizman back in November 2025. It allows for external content to be loaded without proper origin checks, thereby breaching the same-origin policy that is critical for web security.

Users are urged to ensure their Chrome browsers are updated without delay. Chrome typically updates automatically, but a manual check can be triggered by navigating to Help > About Google Chrome. The same vulnerability has also been patched in the Android version, which is now at 143.0.7499.193.

In addition to Chrome, other browsers based on Chromium are expected to follow suit with updates. Currently, Microsoft Edge and Brave are both on the same Chromium version, and they will need to push updates to safeguard their users. Meanwhile, Vivaldi has opted to stick with the Extended Stable Channel from the previous version, planning to roll out an update soon.

The competition remains tight, with the Opera One browser also needing updates for its older Chromium version. As the digital landscape evolves, ensuring browser security is paramount for millions of users worldwide.

As this story develops, users are encouraged to stay vigilant and update their browsers immediately to protect against potential threats. With cybersecurity threats ever-present, awareness and prompt action are crucial.
