Deborah J. Westaway, Esteemed Nurse and Educator, Passes Away
BREAKING: The nursing community mourns the loss of Deborah J. Westaway, a beloved nurse and educator, who passed away recently at the age of 68. Known for her unwavering dedication to patient care and education, Deborah leaves behind a profound legacy in both nursing practice and academia.
Deborah, a long-time resident of Chelmsford, grew up in Andover and graduated from Andover High School. She earned her Nursing degree from Boston University, launching a remarkable career that spanned decades. As a Labor and Delivery Nurse at Boston City Hospital, she supported countless families during pivotal moments in their lives, embodying her motto: ‘the needs of the patient come first.’
Driven by her passion for mentorship, Deborah pursued a Master’s Degree in Nurse Education. For 26 years, she inspired nursing students as a Professor at Bunker Hill Community College, shaping the future of healthcare. Her impactful teaching left an indelible mark on generations of students who will carry her lessons forward.
Deborah retired in 2022, but her influence continues. She is survived by her partner, Brad MacGowan, her brothers William, Bruce, and Barry Westaway, her sister Dorothy Donohue, and numerous cherished nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, William and Claudine Westaway.
In her honor, a funeral service will be held on Monday, February 9, 2026, at 1:00 PM at The Chapel at West Parish Garden Cemetery, located at 210 Lowell St., Andover. Interment will be private. Arrangements are managed by BLAKE CHELMSFORD FUNERAL HOME, with directors Paul A. Hardy, Jr. and Jennifer Lebaropoulos Hardy overseeing the proceedings.
