Lashell Warner, a resident assisting her father with the impending move, expressed the emotional weight of the situation:

“This is my dad’s home and it has been for 20 years, and I know he didn’t want to leave.”

The building’s management, facing bankruptcy since last month, was required to pay a $43,000 utility deposit to DTE Energy by December 3 or risk a power shutoff. This situation escalated when the original lender withdrew support on Friday, November 28, leaving tenants with a notice to vacate just days before the deadline.

Residents like Emanuel Hill, who has lived at Leland House for 18 years, voiced their concerns:

“We’ve got people who’ve been here for 40 years.”

However, attorney Nathan Resnick announced on Tuesday afternoon that they found a new lender, pending approval from a bankruptcy judge. A crucial hearing is scheduled for Thursday, December 4, at 11 a.m. Resnick stated,

“The financing will pay the funds to DTE that are required to be paid by Thursday, December 4, to continue power at the building for all the residents and to operate the Leland.”

DTE Energy is actively collaborating with the landlord to ensure residents’ needs are met. The utility company issued a 30-day public notice at all building entrances to inform tenants of the potential power disconnect. Furthermore, DTE is working with the city to explore alternative housing options for Leland House residents.
