BREAKING: An urgent hazardous materials response unfolded in Evanston, Illinois, after a woman was found in distress near a suspicious substance. Emergency services were called to Greenwood Care, an intermediate care facility located at 1406 Chicago Ave., around 10 a.m. on Friday.

Upon arrival, first responders discovered the female resident “conscious but with altered mental status.” She was promptly transported to a local hospital for evaluation, but just minutes later, at 10:12 a.m., authorities initiated a hazardous materials response due to the unidentified substance located in her room and a fanny pack.

The Evanston Fire Department quickly isolated the suspicious material, and officials confirmed it did not pose a risk to the public. Evidence technicians are now set to send the substance to the Illinois State Police Crime Lab for further narcotics analysis, according to a statement from the police department.

Jessie Mayo, spokesperson for the City of Evanston, noted that the hazardous material has yet to be identified but assured the public that this incident is considered isolated. “They followed all the proper protocols, so they just wanted to be extra cautious,” she stated.

To ensure safety during the operation, police temporarily closed Chicago Avenue between Dempster Street and Lake Street. The coordinated response involved multiple agencies, including the Evanston Police Department and regional hazardous materials teams.

Greenwood Care is a facility designed to accommodate up to 145 beds for individuals with chronic mental health issues, highlighting the critical need for immediate support in such vulnerable situations.

As authorities continue to investigate, residents are advised to remain informed and vigilant. Updates will follow as more information becomes available regarding the nature of the substance and the well-being of the affected individual.

Stay tuned for the latest developments on this evolving situation.
