Ex-Gavin Newsom Aide Indicted for Stealing $225,000 in Fraud Scheme
BREAKING: Former California Governor Gavin Newsom’s chief of staff, Dana Williamson, has been federally indicted for allegedly stealing $225,000 from former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra. This urgent update comes as the U.S. Attorney’s Office Eastern District of California reveals shocking details of a conspiracy that spans from late 2022 to fall 2024.
According to reports from The San Francisco Chronicle, Williamson, aged 53, along with co-defendants including Becerra’s former chief of staff Sean McCluskie and lobbyist Greg Campbell, is accused of orchestrating a scheme to siphon funds from Becerra’s political campaign account under false pretenses. The indictment states that the group intended to pay McCluskie’s wife for monitoring the account, but NO services were rendered. The payments of $10,000 per month accumulated to a staggering $225,000 before they abruptly ended.
Additionally, Williamson allegedly submitted fraudulent tax returns claiming over $1 million in business deductions for personal expenses, including lavish items like private jet travel and designer handbags. If convicted, she faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and substantial fines for multiple counts of bank fraud and conspiracy.
In a statement, Becerra expressed his shock at the allegations, calling them a “gut punch.” He confirmed his full cooperation with the U.S. Department of Justice as the investigation unfolds. Becerra stated, “I have voluntarily cooperated with the US Department of Justice in their investigation, and will continue to do so.”
Newsom’s spokesperson, Izzy Gardon, emphasized that Williamson is no longer affiliated with the governor’s office. “While we are still learning details of the allegations, the Governor expects all public servants to uphold the highest standards of integrity,” Gardon stated. She added that during a time when political tensions are high, it is crucial to uphold the principle of innocence until proven guilty.
As this story develops, the implications of this indictment raise significant questions about ethical conduct in public office. The ongoing investigation highlights the need for transparency and accountability among government officials.
