Experts Reveal Key Tips for Sticking to New Year’s Resolutions
UPDATE: As people dive into their New Year’s resolutions, experts are sharing vital strategies to ensure these goals are more than just fleeting promises. With only two days into the new year, many are seeking ways to transform their ambitions into lasting changes.
Individuals across the globe are setting their sights on 2026 with aspirations ranging from weight loss to financial savings. However, a growing consensus among mental health professionals highlights that the secret to lasting resolutions lies not in the goals themselves, but in the systems and habits behind them.
Clinical therapist Jenny Sweeney emphasizes the importance of selecting achievable goals. “My resolution is to fuel my body better to enhance my performance as an athlete,” she shared. Alongside her sister, Jillian Sweeney, who aims to learn something new every week, the Sweeneys are prime examples of how specific targets can lead to progress.
Meanwhile, Kelly Overend plans to run a 5K every month, focusing on consistency rather than perfection. “It’s the first time I feel determined to follow through. I make a plan and stick to it,” she stated.
However, statistics indicate that many resolutions falter within the first two months. “I excel at making resolutions but struggle with following through,” admitted Richard Kwon, who aspires to complete a first draft of his novel this year. His experience reflects a common challenge faced by many.
Soccer coach Victor Plasse asserts that the failure of resolutions often stems from a lack of supportive habits. “Resolutions fail without a solid system in place. The focus should be on enjoying the process,” he advised, emphasizing the importance of creating sustainable routines.
Mental health experts like Corrine Smorra, chief clinical officer at Heart and Mind Counseling, encourage individuals to view setbacks as part of the journey. “Just because you mess up doesn’t mean you’ve failed. The goal is progress,” she said, noting that adjusting goals to fit changing circumstances is still a form of success.
Experts agree that the most effective resolutions are realistic, flexible, and designed to integrate seamlessly into one’s lifestyle. The focus for 2026 is not about doing more, but rather about cultivating lasting habits that promote overall well-being.
As the new year unfolds, individuals are encouraged to reflect on their aspirations and adjust their strategies for success. What remains crucial is the commitment to progress, allowing for a more fulfilling journey throughout the year.
