Experts Urge Daily Foot Washing to Combat Bacteria Growth

URGENT UPDATE: Health experts are emphasizing the importance of daily foot washing to combat the billions of bacteria that thrive on our feet. Los Angeles dermatologists are warning that neglecting foot hygiene can lead to serious skin issues, especially for those on their feet for extended periods.

According to Tanya Nino, a dermatologist with Providence St. Joseph Medical Heritage Group, the soles of your feet boast an astounding 600 sweat glands per square centimeter, making them a prime location for bacterial growth. “When you get over-moisture, that’s when the skin can get macerated, leading to overgrowth of fungus and yeast,” Nino explained.

This warning is particularly relevant for individuals like Krystal Malhotra, a nurse who spends 10 to 12 hours a day in closed-toe shoes. “Shower time is when I get to baby my feet,” Malhotra shared, stressing her routine of washing her feet thoroughly each day, including the often-overlooked spaces between the toes.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that Americans wash their feet daily, but Nino suggests that a daily rinse is sufficient for most people. “Some soaps can strip the skin of your natural barrier, so I don’t really advocate for soaping everything down,” she cautioned.

For those with conditions like diabetes that affect circulation, foot hygiene is even more critical. “If you have a cut and you don’t know it, it can become infected,” Nino warned.

With the potential for bacteria to thrive, ensuring feet are completely dry after washing is just as important as the washing itself. Malhotra noted, “I’m so scared of getting stinky feet!” highlighting a common concern that many can relate to.

Experts are urging everyone to take immediate action. If you haven’t been paying attention to your foot hygiene, now is the time to start. Regular washing and drying can prevent infections and keep your feet healthy. Don’t underestimate the importance of daily foot care—your feet deserve it!

For those who may have been unaware, this is a crucial reminder of the importance of maintaining foot hygiene. As we navigate our busy lives, let’s ensure we give our feet the attention they need to stay healthy and bacterial-free.
