Faculty Senate Honors Late Members, Celebrates Family Weekend

URGENT UPDATE: The Faculty Senate of Stanford University held a significant meeting on March 5, 2023, to honor the legacies of several esteemed faculty members who have passed away and to recognize the efforts of those organizing the upcoming family weekend.

In a heartfelt memorial resolution, the senate paid tribute to the remarkable lives of Walter Falcon, Alven Hackel, and Lyman Van Slyke. Falcon, who served as the former deputy director of the Center on Food Security and the Environment, passed away at the age of 86. His contributions were highlighted by senator Rosamond “Roz” Naylor, a distinguished professor in the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability.

Also remembered was Alven Hackel, a professor emeritus of anesthesiology and pediatrics, who died at 91. Hackel’s pioneering work in pediatric anesthesiology, including the invention of a transport incubator for newborns, greatly advanced the care of infants during surgical procedures. His legacy was emphasized by Erin Digitale, who authored his obituary.

The senate further honored Lyman Van Slyke, a professor emeritus of history who specialized in 20th-century Chinese history and died at 94. A senate member remarked on Van Slyke’s enduring contributions to the university through teaching and other engagements.

In a notable shift, a new resolution was introduced to reinstate land acknowledgment into the Faculty Senate’s agenda. However, it was dismissed by chair Anna Grymala-Busse, who stated that the topic did not fall under the senate’s jurisdiction.

University president Jonathan Levin expressed gratitude for the efforts of those involved in organizing the upcoming family weekend, including Vice Provost Jay Hamilton. Levin described the event as a “wonderful parent’s weekend,” underscoring its importance to the university community.

Provost Jenny Martinez offered to field questions during the meeting but received none from attendees. Notably absent were ASSU president Ava Brown and Vice President Will Birreman, leaving their fellow senators to reflect on the meeting’s poignant tributes and ongoing initiatives.
