URGENT UPDATE: Families across Western New York are bracing for a drastic cut in food assistance as federal SNAP benefits are set to end this Saturday, October 29, 2025, amid the ongoing government shutdown. With nearly a month of uncertainty, families like that of Maranda Johnson fear they will struggle to provide basic meals.

The impending cutoff has sparked immediate concern for hunger relief organizations. FeedMore WNY, which distributes food to nearly 400 pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters throughout Erie and surrounding counties, is preparing for a surge in demand as federal support vanishes. Lavelle Salter, a staff coordinator at FeedMore, reported that the organization is mobilizing resources to meet the expected needs.

“This situation is critical,” said Rev. Mark E. Blue of Second Baptist Church in Lackawanna, which operates a food pantry three days a week. “SNAP benefits are a lifeline for many families in our community. Without them, people will go hungry.”

As the clock ticks down to the cutoff, food banks and relief agencies are racing to organize supplies. Boxes of food, including fresh produce like squash, are being prepared at FeedMore’s warehouse in Buffalo, with volunteers on high alert for the influx of individuals seeking aid.

The impact of this cutoff cannot be overstated. Families that already struggle to make ends meet will face even greater challenges as they lose critical support. Johnson expressed her fears, stating, “You barely get by as it is. Without these benefits, I don’t know how we will manage.”

With the potential for increased hunger, local agencies are urging community members to donate food and funds to help stockpantries. The urgency is palpable as the community gears up for what could become a humanitarian crisis if the federal government shutdown continues.

As this situation develops, officials and organizations are calling on the government to resolve the shutdown and restore vital assistance. The upcoming days will be crucial for families across the region as they navigate the uncertainty and fight for their basic right to food.

Stay tuned for further updates on this urgent issue as it unfolds.
