URGENT UPDATE: Ford Motor Company has just announced a major recall affecting 412,774 Explorer SUVs due to critical safety concerns. The recall targets certain 2017-2019 models that may experience a rear suspension toe link fracture, compromising steering control and significantly increasing the risk of crashes.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been in contact with Ford regarding reports of steering control loss linked to rear toe-link fractures in five 2018 Explorer vehicles. Following an investigation initiated in late January 2023, Ford identified an additional 26 reports related to this troubling issue. While the automaker has confirmed no injuries directly associated with the fractures, there have been two alarming instances where vehicles collided with road barriers that may be connected to this defect.

Ford is set to begin notifying affected owners early next month. The company plans to replace the faulty toe links with stronger components designed to be “more resistant to a seized cross-axis ball joint” than the original parts. This recall is not an isolated incident; Ford previously addressed similar toe link fractures in certain 2013-2017 Explorer models back in 2021.

The urgency of this recall cannot be overstated as it highlights ongoing safety challenges faced by Ford, affecting both newer and older vehicles. The implications for drivers and families on the road are significant, emphasizing the importance of prompt action from automakers to rectify potentially hazardous situations.

As this story develops, it’s critical for current and prospective Ford Explorer owners to stay informed and take necessary precautions. For more updates on this situation and other automotive safety news, stay tuned.
