Former Iranian Prisoners Expose Brutal Torture Amid Deadly Crackdown
UPDATE: Former Iranian political prisoners are shedding light on horrific abuses occurring behind bars as the regime escalates its deadly crackdown on protests. Eyewitness accounts reveal a chilling reality: security forces are reportedly executing injured protesters on the spot, indicating a desperate attempt to suppress dissent amid growing civil unrest across the country.
In interviews with Fox News Digital, three former detainees shared harrowing experiences of torture, solitary confinement, and medical neglect that expose a systematic approach to breaking dissent. The testimonies come as protests intensify in January 2026, fueled by widespread anger against the regime’s oppressive practices.
Maryam Shariatmadari, a prominent figure in the “Girls of Revolution Street” protests, described the current situation as unprecedented. “According to eyewitnesses, the suppressive forces of the Islamic Republic are delivering ‘final shots’ to wounded protesters,” she stated. This alarming tactic marks a new level of brutality in a regime already infamous for its violent repression over the past 47 years.
Shariatmadari, who was sentenced to one year in prison in March 2018 for protesting mandatory hijab laws, emphasized that the regime’s capacity to detain demonstrators has been overwhelmed. “They are killing protesters without any form of trial,” she said, highlighting that authorities have expanded detention methods during the current protests to include schools and ambulances.
The chilling accounts don’t stop there. Mehdi Ghadimi, a freelance journalist and Shariatmadari’s husband, recounted his harrowing experience after being arrested in January 2023. “I was interrogated for eight hours daily, blindfolded, with fellow detainees facing severe beatings,” he said. Ghadimi warned that the current wave of arrests could see even harsher treatment for detainees, as the Iranian judiciary signals a hardline approach.
With reports suggesting that the number of detainees may exceed 10,000, the situation raises alarm bells. Activists claim the true figure likely dwarfs the official count of 2,600, indicating a potential humanitarian crisis unfolding behind closed prison doors.
Shabnam Madadzadeh, who endured imprisonment during the 2009 uprising, expressed profound fears of mass executions, drawing parallels to past atrocities. “There is a real danger that such a massacre could be repeated as the regime faces collapse,” she warned. Madadzadeh, reflecting on her traumatic experiences, highlighted the psychological torture faced by detainees, saying, “Families are moving between detention centers, prisons, morgues, and cemeteries. This uncertainty itself is the greatest form of torture.”
As the protests continue, the urgency for international attention grows. The former prisoners echoed a unified call for the world not to look away. “The people of Iran are united in their demand for regime change,” Shariatmadari asserted.
In the wake of this escalating violence, Madadzadeh urged immediate action: “Force the regime to allow independent visits to prisons and secret detention centers. Lives depend on it.”
The emotional weight of these testimonies serves as a stark reminder of the brutality faced by those challenging the Iranian regime. As the world watches, the demand for accountability and intervention becomes ever more pressing. Each moment of delay exacerbates the suffering of countless individuals facing unimaginable horrors behind prison walls.
The situation in Iran is rapidly evolving, and the international community must respond decisively to address these human rights violations. The time for action is now.
