Fresno Police Launch Weekend Crackdown on Drunk Driving

URGENT UPDATE: Fresno Police are ramping up efforts to combat drunk driving this weekend, launching a significant crackdown that begins at 6 P.M. on Saturday, December 16, 2023, and continues until 4 A.M. on Sunday. Eleven additional officers will be on the streets, specifically targeting intoxicated drivers during this high-risk period.

“The biggest thing is, don’t risk it,” warns Sergeant Todd Turney. Officers will be vigilant, watching for common signs of impaired driving, such as weaving and speeding. This operation comes as many residents celebrate the holiday season, increasing the potential for dangerous driving behaviors.

Tragically, this crackdown follows a recent incident where a husband and wife from Coalinga, Carlos and Maria Pimentel, lost their lives due to a suspected DUI driver. Shawn Borecha is now facing two counts of murder after crashing into the couple while attempting to pass two vehicles under the influence.

The California Highway Patrol reported that drunk driving incidents have reached alarming levels, with over 5,500 DUI cases filed in the county this year alone. Among these, 423 cases are classified as felonies causing “great” injury, and eight have resulted in murder charges, claiming the lives of 15 victims.

“The consequences of impaired driving are severe,” emphasizes Sgt. Turney. “You can affect people and members of the community, as well as yourself.” Beyond the potential legal repercussions, the average cost of a DUI exceeds $13,000 in fines and penalties for first-time offenders, coupled with the loss of driving privileges.

Authorities are urging the public to take proactive measures to ensure safety. “Plan ahead,” advises Sgt. Turney. Options include using ride-sharing services, arranging for a designated driver, or coordinating with friends for safe transportation.
