BREAKING NEWS: Jamie Shimizu Cook, the daughter-in-law of Guam Governor Lou Leon Guerrero, has been released from house arrest and has pleaded not guilty to multiple assault charges. The urgent arraignment took place on Thursday, where Cook formally responded to allegations stemming from a violent incident on January 1, 2023.

Cook, 46, appeared before Superior Court Magistrate Judge Sean Brown, facing a series of serious charges, including aggravated assault as a second-degree felony, along with additional counts of criminal mischief, family violence, and terroristic conduct. The courtroom was filled with supporters as she waived the reading of her indictment and entered her plea.

Cook’s defense attorney, Kristine Borja, successfully argued for the lifting of her house arrest, emphasizing her role as the primary caretaker for her minor children. “Ms. Cook is asking to lift the house arrest. She’s been compliant for about a month, with no violations,” Borja stated during the hearing.

The judge approved a 12-member jury and granted full discovery rights, setting the stage for the next steps in this developing case. Cook’s previous compliance with probation requirements was noted, and authorities confirmed she had checked in as mandated.

The violent incident that led to Cook’s arrest reportedly involved her allegedly assaulting her husband, Joaquin “Kin” Cook, president of the Bank of Guam. In an alarming account, authorities revealed she rammed her vehicle into her husband’s parked car and another vehicle belonging to a woman employed by the Guam Legislature. The alleged victim reported suffering a small laceration, slight swelling, and a bite mark on his arm.

Cook was arrested following the incident and was released the next day on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond, allowing her to leave without posting bail. At her hearings, she has been supported by family and friends, though her husband was notably absent.

The case has raised significant public interest, with implications for both the Cook family and the Guam community. As the legal proceedings move forward, the next hearing is to be scheduled by Superior Court Judge Maria T. Cenzon, who will notify the involved parties via written order.

Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops. The implications of these charges and their impact on the Governor’s family are sure to resonate within the community and beyond.
