Grandma Shatters Vintage Ornament—Finds Hidden Notes from 1960s!
UPDATE: A shocking discovery in Augusta, Georgia, has captured the internet’s attention after a grandmother accidentally shattered a vintage Christmas ornament, revealing a treasure trove of hidden notes. This incredible find has gone viral, highlighting the whimsical history behind holiday decorations.
Earlier today, Ashley Gutierrez Siler, 40, shared her mother’s astonishing discovery on Reddit, showcasing the contents of the broken ornament that had been collecting dust for decades. The ornament, a Shiny-Brite piece, was thrifted long ago, and its exact origins remain a mystery. “She doesn’t know where or when she thrifted it,” Gutierrez Siler explained to Newsweek.
As her mother decorated for Christmas, the ornament was accidentally dropped, shattering into pieces—but what lay inside was nothing short of magical. Among the shards were rolled-up notes and jokes penned by a child named BJ during the 1960s and 70s, each one offering a glimpse into the past.
On December 10, 2023, Gutierrez Siler posted a series of photos on Reddit’s r/FoundPaper, revealing the delightful time capsule. One note, dated 1971, read: “Merry Christmas to the future!” while another, dated 1964, jokingly predicted happiness for those over 40.
The community response was overwhelmingly positive, with users awarding the post over 3,500 upvotes. One user quipped, “So glad I’m over 40, can’t wait to be happy soon!” Another noted the amusing mix-up in BJ’s dating, humorously suggesting he was a “time traveler from 9164.”
Gutierrez Siler expressed her hopes that “grown-up BJ still has enough wonder and joy in life to think about his jokes and the people who have seen them.” The notion that a child once took the time to craft thoughtful messages for future finders adds a layer of nostalgia and warmth to the story.
Inspired by BJ’s hidden notes, Gutierrez Siler and her daughter plan to create their own collection of messages to include in their holiday decorations, encouraging others to do the same. “I love the reaction—we could all use some joy and magic right now,” she said.
This touching story comes at a time when holiday spending among Americans is projected to average $1,007 this year, according to a recent Gallup survey. The nostalgia of vintage ornaments and the stories they carry resonate deeply, reminding us of the magic of childhood and the enduring spirit of Christmas.
As this story continues to spread across social media, it serves as a heartwarming reminder that even broken ornaments can hold unexpected treasures. What will you find in your decorations this year? Share your stories and join the conversation!
