BREAKING: A coalition of Hollywood stars is urgently calling for the release of Palestinian terrorist Marwan Barghouti, who is currently serving five life sentences for orchestrating deadly attacks against Israeli civilians. High-profile actors including Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Ruffalo, and Sir Ian McKellen have joined over 200 public figures in a petition that demands the international community pressure Israel to release Barghouti from prison.

The petition, released just hours ago, expresses “grave concern” over Barghouti’s imprisonment and alleged mistreatment. It calls on the United Nations and global governments to advocate for his freedom, stating, “We express our grave concern at the continuing imprisonment of Marwan Barghouti, his violent mistreatment and denial of legal rights whilst imprisoned.”

Barghouti, a former leader of the Fatah party, has been characterized by supporters as a “powerful symbol of unity” and a figure advocating for “freedom and dignity for the Palestinian people.” However, the campaign overlooks the serious nature of his convictions, which include orchestrating multiple terror attacks during the Second Intifada that resulted in the deaths of five people, including four Israelis and a Greek monk.

In 2004, a Tel Aviv District Court found Barghouti guilty of directing a June 2001 drive-by shooting and other attacks that targeted civilians. He received five consecutive life terms plus an additional 20 years for his involvement in a failed suicide bombing. Despite his lengthy imprisonment, Barghouti remains a popular figure among Palestinians, often topping polls regarding future leadership of the Palestinian Authority.

The petition and its associated website, operating under the slogan “Free Marwan,” frame his narrative in a way that emphasizes his role as a husband and father, while neglecting crucial details of his violent past. Critics argue that this portrayal is misleading, particularly in light of the violent history associated with Barghouti.

Former intelligence analysts have voiced skepticism about the characterization of Barghouti as a peace advocate. A 2017 report by the Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center stated, “Expectations that regard him as a potential partner for a peace agreement are somewhat exaggerated.” The report emphasizes that releasing Barghouti could undermine peace negotiations and may even incite further violence against Israel.

In response to the recent petition, Israeli political correspondent Amit Segal condemned the signatories, stating, “Marwan Barghouti is a cold-blooded mass murderer, responsible for the brutal deaths of dozens of Israelis.” He criticized those who compare him to figures like Nelson Mandela, calling it a “grotesque insult to history and humanity.”

As the Hollywood petition gains traction, the Israeli government has yet to respond officially. The implications of this campaign may influence international dialogue surrounding Israel and Palestine, as well as the ongoing discourse on terrorism and peace negotiations in the region.
