URGENT UPDATE: A homeowner shot and killed an intruder during an alleged break-in early Monday morning in Somerset Township. The incident, which occurred around 2 a.m., has prompted an ongoing investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police.

Authorities report that the homeowner was awakened by loud banging on his kitchen window. Upon investigation, he found a male intruder attempting to break into his home on the 100 block of Locust Street. The intruder reportedly shattered a window, prompting the homeowner to warn him that he was armed. In a split-second decision, the homeowner shot the intruder in the head, with law enforcement discovering the body near the back door shortly after.

According to Somerset County District Attorney Tom Leiden, the homeowner was briefly detained, but preliminary findings suggest he acted in self-defense. “We believe there is no ongoing threat to the public,” Leiden stated, confirming that no charges have been filed at this time.

Residents in the area expressed shock and concern. Local resident JD Ross described the situation as “scary,” emphasizing the tranquility of the neighborhood where he has lived most of his life. “This is a nice neighborhood. We raised our kids here. I still don’t know what happened, but tragic,” Ross added.

As the investigation continues, police are interviewing individuals connected to the incident. The identity of the intruder will be disclosed once next-of-kin notifications are made.
