Hurricane Melissa Intensifies to Category 4, Aims for Jamaica
UPDATE: Hurricane Melissa has rapidly intensified into a powerful Category 4 storm as of early today, September 24, 2023. The National Hurricane Center confirms that Melissa is currently just 120 miles southeast of Kingston, Jamaica, and 280 miles southwest of Guantanamo, Cuba.
This storm is moving slowly westward at just 5 mph, raising alarms as it approaches Jamaica. Forecast models indicate that Melissa will continue its westward path through today before shifting towards the north-northeast on Monday. The storm is predicted to make landfall in Jamaica on Tuesday, before crossing Cuba later that night and impacting the southeastern Bahamas on Wednesday.
In a severe warning, meteorologists estimate that Jamaica and Hispaniola could receive between 15 and 30 inches of rain, while eastern Cuba is expected to face 6 to 12 inches of rainfall through midweek. The slow movement of Melissa could lead to life-threatening flash flooding and landslides across the region, with the potential for dangerous storm surge along Jamaica’s southern coast.
The National Hurricane Center warns that Melissa is likely to strengthen further, possibly reaching Category 5 intensity by tonight. Residents in Jamaica are urged to prepare for a major hurricane impact, as the storm is expected to make landfall as a significant Category 4 storm.
Hurricane warnings are currently in effect for Jamaica, while a hurricane watch has been issued for the southwestern peninsula of Haiti and southeastern provinces of Cuba, including Granma, Santiago de Cuba, Guantanamo, and Holguin.
As this urgent situation develops, authorities are urging residents to stay vigilant and prepare emergency plans. With Melissa’s path likely to bring catastrophic conditions, ensuring safety is paramount.
Stay informed with updates from the National Hurricane Center and local authorities as this situation continues to evolve. For those in the storm’s projected path, it is critical to heed all warnings and prepare for potential evacuation if necessary.
