IRS Opens Free File Program Early; Major Road Projects Completed
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has commenced its annual tax filing initiative earlier than usual, allowing eligible taxpayers to submit their federal income tax returns starting January 9, 2026. Through the IRS Free File program, individuals with an adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less can prepare and file their 2025 returns in advance of the official filing season, which begins later in January. This early access is intended to streamline the filing process for millions of Americans.
The IRS Free File program offers free, guided tax software provided by eight private-sector partners. These tools enable eligible taxpayers to prepare their returns now and submit them electronically once the official filing period opens. For those with incomes exceeding $89,000, the Free File Fillable Forms will be available beginning January 26, 2026. These forms are designed for individuals who are comfortable preparing their own tax returns using IRS guidelines.
Importantly, the IRS Free File program also allows eligible taxpayers to claim refundable tax credits at no additional cost. This includes the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit, which can significantly reduce tax liabilities or result in refunds, even for those who do not owe taxes. Taxpayers can explore their options and select a trusted provider by visiting IRS.gov/freefile, with access available on various devices including computers, smartphones, and tablets.
