Italy Withdraws Troops from Erbil Base After Missile Strike

URGENT UPDATE: Italy is executing a rapid withdrawal of its remaining troops from the military base in Erbil, northern Iraq, following a missile strike reported earlier today. Defense Minister Guido Crosetto announced that the drawdown was already planned, emphasizing that all personnel are safe and accounted for after moving to secure areas.

The missile attack on the base, which also serves as a NATO facility housing US infrastructure, occurred despite pre-emptive security measures taken by the Italian forces. Crosetto confirmed that no casualties were reported among the approximately 140 Italian troops stationed there, highlighting that 102 personnel have already returned to Italy and an additional 40 have relocated to Jordan.

This strategic withdrawal comes amid rising tensions in the region, particularly due to escalating conflicts involving Iran. The minister noted that the threat of an attack had been anticipated, prompting swift action to secure troops. “This is a NATO base,” Crosetto stated during an interview with Italian public broadcaster RAI, suggesting that the missile strike was deliberate.

Hungary, which also has soldiers deployed at the Erbil base as part of international efforts, is closely monitoring the situation. Any sustained escalation around this key coalition facility raises concerns for the safety of allied troops in Iraq.

The logistics of the troop withdrawal are complex, as direct flights are not possible. Troops are expected to leave via land routes, likely through Turkey, as the situation develops.

As tensions mount with potential Iranian retaliation following recent US and Israeli strikes that began on February 28, the urgency for a safe and efficient withdrawal is paramount. The implications of this situation extend beyond military logistics, affecting international relations and the safety of allied forces in a volatile region.

Stay tuned for further updates as this situation unfolds.
