Joseph Omundson, Community Leader, Passes Away at 86
URGENT UPDATE: Joseph “Joe” Omundson, a beloved community figure and dedicated family man, has passed away at the age of 86. He died on February 18, 2026, at the Interfaith Care Center in Carlton, Minnesota, prompting an outpouring of condolences from friends and family.
Born on August 8, 1939, in Minneapolis, Omundson moved to Duluth at just 8 years old. He graduated from Denfeld High School in 1957 and went on to serve in the Army National Guard from 1962 to 1968. Omundson dedicated 37 years of his career as a sales representative at Georgia Pacific (Superwood), retiring in 1997.
Omundson’s legacy is marked by his commitment to community service. He was a member of the Masons, Enclid Lodge, and Shrine, and participated actively in various organizations, including the North Shore Striders and the Harley Owners Group. His passion for sports saw him refereeing high school hockey and umpiring fast-pitch softball, while his love for running led him to compete in races from 5 miles to marathons.
Family was of utmost importance to Joe. He married Barb Hutchinson in 1976 at 1st Covenant Church, and together they raised a family that includes daughter Jody Rademaker, son Joel Omundson, and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 18, from 2-4 PM at the Cremation Society located at 4100 Grand Ave., Duluth, MN. A Masonic service will follow at 4 PM, along with honors from the Duluth Honor Guard. Inurnment will take place at Oneota Cemetery.
The family expresses heartfelt thanks to the staff at Interfaith Care Center and St. Croix Hospice for their exceptional care during Joe’s final days. His contributions to the community and his family will be profoundly missed, leaving a remarkable legacy of service and love.
