Khris Middleton Weighs Contract Options with Mavericks Amid Season Uncertainty
Khris Middleton, a veteran of 14 NBA seasons, has yet to decide whether he will remain with the Dallas Mavericks or pursue an opportunity with a contender before the upcoming contract buyout deadline. This decision comes after Middleton’s brief tenure with the Mavericks, where he has demonstrated his scoring prowess in recent games.
Middleton, who reunited with head coach Jason Kidd—his former coach during their time with the Milwaukee Bucks—is reflecting on the potential outcomes of his current situation. The two spent four seasons together in Milwaukee, transforming the team into a competitive force. Under Kidd’s guidance, Middleton blossomed into a three-time All-Star and was instrumental in the Bucks’ championship victory in 2021.
Middleton’s Performance and Future Outlook
In his recent outings, Middleton has shown he can still contribute significantly to the team. He scored 25 points in a victory against the Indiana Pacers and added 17 points in a loss to the Sacramento Kings. Despite his individual success, the Mavericks are facing challenges, missing several key players due to injuries.
As the March 1 deadline approaches for contract buyouts, Middleton is weighing his options. He stated, “I’ll talk to my agent here by Saturday. Hear what he has to say. Don’t know what teams are out there really.” Players who agree to contract buyouts before this date can sign with other teams and be eligible for postseason play.
The Mavericks are currently struggling with injuries, notably missing rookie sensation Cooper Flagg, who has been out with a left foot sprain. Kidd has encouraged Middleton to mentor Flagg, highlighting the importance of veteran leadership during challenging times. “I’ve been talking to him a lot about how he can help Coop,” Kidd noted about Middleton’s role.
Reflecting on Past Experiences
Middleton shared fond memories of his time with Kidd, recalling the challenges they faced together early in their careers. He remarked, “It’s a full-circle moment,” appreciating the growth they have both experienced since their Milwaukee days. He acknowledged Kidd’s evolution as a coach, noting that he now employs a different approach compared to when they first worked together.
Middleton’s insights into Flagg’s potential reflect his deep understanding of the game. He praised Flagg, saying, “That guy is amazing. He does so many things well at such a young age. He’s dominant.” As the Mavericks navigate the rest of the season, Middleton’s decision will have significant implications for both his career and the team’s future.
As the deadline looms, the basketball community will be watching closely to see if Middleton opts to remain with the Mavericks or seek a new path with a playoff contender. His experience and skills make him a valuable asset for any team looking to strengthen its roster as the postseason approaches.
