Kimmel and Colbert Slam FCC’s Equal Time Mandate as Censorship
UPDATE: Late-night hosts Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert are reacting fiercely to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)’s new enforcement of its “equal time” mandate, labeling it a direct attack on their shows. This decision, announced on October 26, 2023, mandates that networks provide equal airtime to opposing political candidates, sparking outrage from both comedians who claim it seeks to “stifle” their voices.
Kimmel addressed the FCC’s notice in his monologue on October 25, 2023, suggesting that Donald Trump is continuing his “war on talk shows.” He criticized the FCC chair Brendan Carr for allegedly using the agency to silence dissenting viewpoints, dubbing him “Brendan Cartel.” Kimmel argued that the rules were outdated and originated in an era when radio dominated the media landscape, stating, “Broadcast TV used to account for 100% of viewing…now it’s like 20%.”
In a passionate defense, Kimmel elaborated on the implications of the FCC’s action. He recalled that since 2006, late-night shows have operated under an exemption that allowed more flexibility regarding political content. This exemption was famously highlighted when former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appeared on “The Tonight Show.” Kimmel asserted, “Carr is doing everything he can to shut us up the easy way or the hard way.”
Colbert also weighed in during his show, humorously indicating that he must now tread carefully with his commentary on Trump due to the FCC’s crackdown. He quipped, “I got to watch what I say about Trump, because Johnny Law is once again coming after yours truly here,” eliciting boos from the audience.
The New York Times described the FCC’s latest move as a “new crackdown on late-night TV,” which Colbert emphasized would have lasting implications for his show. He sarcastically remarked, “Hey, I’m flattered you think that appearing on my show has the power to affect politics in any way.”
This developing story raises significant concerns regarding freedom of expression in a media landscape increasingly dominated by political pressures. Late-night television has long been a platform for satire and critique, and the FCC’s intervention could fundamentally alter how these shows operate.
As the situation unfolds, Kimmel and Colbert’s responses underscore a growing tension between entertainment and regulatory oversight. Viewers and fans are left wondering how this will impact the future of television commentary as Kimmel remarked, “I have no idea what the outcome of this is going to be.”
Stay tuned for updates on this urgent issue as late-night hosts continue to navigate the implications of the FCC’s enforcement of the “equal time” rule.
