Lakers Partner with Dodgers for Championship Strategy Shift
UPDATE: The Los Angeles Lakers are forging a groundbreaking partnership with the back-to-back World Series champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers, aiming to elevate their championship strategy. This collaboration was confirmed by Rob Pelinka, Lakers’ president of basketball operations, just before their game against the Golden State Warriors on February 7, 2026.
Pelinka revealed that this alliance has been invaluable, especially following the recent acquisition of the Lakers by Mark Walter at a staggering $10 billion valuation. “[It’s] been great to have sort of outside allies and advocates looking at the Dodgers and the success they’ve had,” Pelinka stated. This partnership aims to harness the Dodgers’ proven success to enhance the Lakers’ operations and performance.
The Lakers’ leadership is keen to adopt the Dodgers’ effective practices, particularly from their president of baseball operations, Andrew Friedman. Pelinka praised Friedman, saying, “He’s so incredibly smart and has done such an amazing job bringing championships to the Dodgers.” This collaboration could be a game-changer as the Lakers strategize for upcoming seasons.
Pelinka, along with Jeanie Buss, Lakers’ acting governor, and Walter, have engaged in discussions on how to leverage this new ownership to bolster the team’s future. “Looking at the Dodgers and how they built it out has been a great sort of example and North Star,” Pelinka added.
As part of their restructuring, the Lakers are looking to enhance their front office, which has been streamlined since Magic Johnson’s unexpected resignation in 2019. Pelinka emphasized the need to expand their personnel, stating, “There is no expense they’ll spare in being the best sort of front office in the world.”
With the NBA trade deadline approaching, Pelinka confirmed that the Lakers are actively evaluating their options to optimize their roster. The team currently has three future first-round picks and nearly $50 million in projected cap space for this summer, giving them significant flexibility.
In a recent trade, the Lakers acquired Luke Kennard from the Atlanta Hawks, showcasing their commitment to enhancing their shooting capabilities. Pelinka remarked, “When you get to add the best shooter in the game to your group at the deadline, it’s a great opportunity. So, we seized it.”
Pelinka also addressed the Lakers’ long-term strategies as they navigate the complexities of new league regulations, stating, “Creating optionality now is really a positive thing for us this coming offseason.” He is optimistic about potential acquisitions as teams reassess their financial standings under the new dual-apron system.
As this partnership unfolds, Lakers fans can expect significant changes and potential enhancements to their roster, inspired by the Dodgers’ successful formula. The Lakers are poised for a transformative offseason, aiming to return to their championship-winning ways.
Stay tuned for further updates as the Lakers continue to reshape their strategy and align more closely with the winning culture established by the Dodgers.
