Lenhartsville Couple Receives 2025 Friend of 4-H Award
URGENT UPDATE: Roger and Nancy Bowman of Lenhartsville have been honored with the 2025 Friend of 4-H Award for their remarkable dedication to youth agriculture education. This recognition was announced by Lehigh County 4-H as their commitment significantly impacts 4-H members across Berks and Lehigh counties.
The Bowmans, who have championed 4-H initiatives for over three decades, have been pivotal in promoting agricultural knowledge among youth. Their efforts include serving as Berks County 4-H leaders for more than 30 years and currently supporting the Lehigh County 4-H Livestock Club alongside their grandsons.
Since purchasing their farm in Lenhartsville in 1973, the Bowmans have raised various livestock, focusing on purebred Corriedale and Dorset sheep. They actively participate in prominent events such as the Allentown Fair, York Fair, and the Pennsylvania Farm Show, showcasing their animals and wool fleeces.
Their contributions extend beyond livestock. For the past 20 years, they have served as sheep and goat superintendents at the Allentown Fair, assisting with registrations and teaching thousands of students during Agricultural Day sessions. Their educational impact is profound, providing hands-on learning experiences that have enriched countless lives.
In 2022, the Bowmans initiated an annual shawl project with the Lehigh County 4-H Livestock Club, donating yarn and equipment for a complete sheep-to-shawl experience. This project has raised an impressive $9,550 for eight local charities over the past four years, highlighting their commitment to both education and community support.
Additionally, they have conducted workshops on wool grading and sheep breed characteristics, enhancing the knowledge and skills of 4-H livestock teams across Pennsylvania. Their efforts have fostered a generation of confident and knowledgeable young agriculturalists.
As the Bowmans receive this prestigious award, their legacy in agricultural education continues to inspire.
