The Nashville Public Library has launched a digital exhibition featuring letters exchanged between William Raymond Whittaker and Jane Dean, shedding light on their relationship during one of history’s most turbulent times.

The letters, discovered in a Nashville home that belonged to Jane and her siblings, were donated to the Metro Nashville Archives in 2016. Kelley Sirko, the library’s metropolitan archivist, revealed that Ray, originally from New Rochelle, New York, moved to Nashville to attend Meharry Medical College, where he met Jane. Their romance rekindled when Ray, drafted in 1942, reached out to Jane while stationed at Fort Huachuca in Arizona.

Just days after reconnecting, Jane replied in a letter dated July 30, 1942, expressing both joy and concern: “It sure was a pleasant and sad surprise to hear from you… I’m proud to know that you are doing your bit for your country.” The exchange quickly escalated from nostalgia to romance, with Ray hinting about a potential marriage in an undated letter from September 1942, writing, “I might even ask you to marry me. One never knows.”

The urgency of their situation is palpable. As Ray prepared for service with the segregated 92nd Infantry Division, he joked about his salary prospects in the army, yet the backdrop of war loomed large over their budding relationship. Jane’s skepticism about Ray’s feelings, expressed in her letter on September 23, highlights the emotional complexity of wartime love.

The couple’s commitment deepened, culminating in their marriage on November 7, 1942, in Birmingham. Jane’s letter just two days later captures her elation and heartache: “It’s a wonderful thing to have such a sweet and lovely husband.
