Makhachev Secures Welterweight Title, Dominates Della Maddalena
URGENT UPDATE: Islam Makhachev has made history by becoming the new welterweight champion at UFC 322, dominating Jack Della Maddalena with a decisive unanimous decision victory. The fight took place on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in New York, marking a monumental moment in Makhachev’s career as he added a second championship to his accolades.
In a display of sheer skill, Makhachev (28-1) tied the legendary Anderson Silva for the longest winning streak in UFC history with his 16th consecutive win. Makhachev showcased his dominance by controlling the fight for an astonishing 19 minutes and 10 seconds, outstriking Della Maddalena (18-3) 123-32.
“This is the dream,” Makhachev stated after the fight. “All my life I’ve fought for this. I worked hard for this moment.” His move up to the welterweight division proved successful, as he noted, “I didn’t have to cut weight. I can do what I want. It made this night easy.”
Della Maddalena, who had previously gone undefeated since his early career losses, faced relentless pressure from Makhachev throughout the fight. The Australian fighter struggled to find his footing as Makhachev executed every takedown attempt, keeping Della Maddalena pinned for long stretches. Despite being outmatched, Della Maddalena showed resilience, refusing to be finished.
“This was my plan, and it’s not a secret,” Makhachev declared post-fight. “All of my opponents know this, but nobody can stop it.” With this victory, Makhachev has solidified his status as one of the greatest lightweights in UFC history and is now poised to tackle the challenges in an incredibly stacked welterweight division.
Looking ahead, Makhachev is not holding back. “Open the White House,” he proclaimed, referencing the UFC’s anticipated event targeted for 2026. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see what this superstar will accomplish next.
As the MMA community buzzes with excitement, Makhachev’s triumphant night serves as a reminder of his hard work and determination. This victory is not just a personal triumph but a moment that will resonate throughout the sport.
