Nationals Fire Interim Manager Miguel Cairo, Major Coaching Shakeup
BREAKING: The Washington Nationals have officially announced that interim manager Miguel Cairo will not be offered the permanent managerial position, following a dismal season. This major overhaul comes just weeks after the appointment of Paul Toboni as the new president of baseball operations, as the team seeks to revitalize its struggling performance.
Sources confirm that members of Cairo’s coaching staff, including pitching coach Jim Hickey, hitting coach Darnell Coles, bullpen coach Ricky Bones, first-base coach Gerardo Parra, and third-base coach Ricky Gutierrez, are also being let go. The announcement was made shortly after October 1, 2023, when Toboni was introduced to the media, highlighting the urgency for change within the organization.
The Nationals have endured six consecutive losing seasons since their 2019 World Series victory, with a disappointing record of 66-96 in 2025, placing them 14th out of 15 teams in the National League. This continued decline has prompted ownership to take decisive action.
At the press conference on October 1, Nationals owner Mark Lerner expressed dissatisfaction with the team’s current state, stating, “We’re not happy where we are right now. That’s why we brought in Paul. And we’re going to get back to where we’re supposed to be. … Don’t give up on us; we’re going to be there again. Guaranteed.”
Cairo, who took over as interim manager in July after the firing of Dave Martinez, was well-regarded but could not turn the team’s fortunes around. His connection to Martinez, a close friend, added emotional stakes to his tenure, which began with hope but ultimately fell short.
As the Nationals prepare for a critical off-season, the focus will now shift to finding a new manager and reshaping the coaching staff. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how this drastic change will impact the team’s strategy moving forward.
With the pressure mounting to improve, all eyes are on the Nationals’ next steps. Will the new leadership bring the turnaround that the franchise desperately needs? Stay tuned for further developments as the team works to reclaim its competitive edge in Major League Baseball.
