NBA Scrutinizes Vulnerable Bets Amid Ongoing Betting Scandal
UPDATE: The NBA is taking decisive action in response to a growing betting scandal. Sources report that the league is actively reviewing which bets are most vulnerable to manipulation, as it seeks to tighten regulations on player prop bets. This urgent move comes after alarming allegations against veteran NBA guard Terry Rozier, who is implicated in a scheme involving insider information on his own performance.
According to reports from ESPN, the NBA has identified types of wagers, including missed free throws, fouls, and turnovers, as particularly susceptible to manipulation. The league has asked its partner sportsbooks, including FanDuel and DraftKings, to refrain from offering these risky bets. Both companies have complied, with FanDuel having already excluded such wagers in previous seasons, and DraftKings recently withdrawing in-game betting on free throws prior to games.
This development is critical as the NBA prepares for the 2024-25 season. Discussions continue regarding appropriate betting limits, especially on player prop bets, where the potential for integrity breaches is heightened. An NBA spokesperson emphasized that these limits are necessary, stating,
“Prop bets on individual player performance can raise heightened integrity concerns and warrant additional scrutiny.”
The scrutiny intensified after federal authorities alleged that Rozier conspired with gamblers to manipulate bets on his statistics. In March 2023, he reportedly informed a childhood friend of his plan to exit a game early, allowing the friend to sell this information to gamblers for approximately $100,000. In a shocking turn, bettors were able to wager an estimated $257,700 on the under for Rozier’s performance, resulting in sportsbooks removing his prop bets from their boards just hours before the game.
In a related case, Jontay Porter, a former Toronto Raptors center, was banned from the NBA for his involvement in a gambling scheme that manipulated his performance in two games during the 2023-24 season. This incident raised further alarm among NBA officials regarding the integrity of player prop bets, especially as they become more popular.
As the NBA collaborates with sportsbooks to refine betting offerings, the Sports Betting Alliance (SBA) warns that overly restrictive measures could push bettors toward illegal platforms. Jeremy Kudon, president of the SBA, cautioned that such actions could create a dangerous blind spot for regulators, preventing effective oversight.
The NBA’s push to safeguard game integrity comes at a crucial time, as player prop bets represent a growing segment of betting activity in basketball. As fans and bettors await the league’s next moves, the focus remains on ensuring that sports betting can operate with integrity while still providing an engaging experience for fans.
