New Bike Shop Opens at Georgia Tech, Boosting Campus Cycling

UPDATE: A new bike shop has just opened at Georgia Tech, enhancing support for the campus’s cycling community. Located inside the Campus Recreation Center, the shop began operations in August 2023 to meet the needs of the university’s growing number of cyclists, recognized as a Gold-Level Bicycle Friendly University.

The shop offers a range of essential services including shifter adjustments and 10-speed chain replacements. With many students and CRC members depending on bicycles for transportation and exercise, the initiative spearheaded by Expeditions and Adventures Coordinator Tyler Joing and Assistant Director of Outdoor Recreation David Knobbe aims to provide a convenient option for repairs.

“Riding a bike is a healthy and positive transportation choice, but if you don’t have the know-how or the tools, something as simple as a flat tire can take your bike offline for a couple of months,” Knobbe stated. “Now, if you have a flat tire today, Campus Recreation’s Bike Shop is conveniently located on campus and can get you back up and running by the end of the day.”

The shop is open Monday through Friday, from 3 to 6 PM, welcoming all students, faculty, and staff with an active CRC membership. Customers can drop in for a free assessment or fill out an intake form in advance. For repairs, the shop charges $5 for up to the first hour of labor, plus the cost of parts.

To ensure swift service, the shop stocks popular sizes of tubes, tires, and commonly replaced items like chains, brake pads, and shifter cables. Mechanics will work closely with customers needing more complex repairs, providing recommendations and cost estimates. Currently, the shop is managed by Outdoor Recreation and staffed by eight student mechanics.

Looking ahead, Joing plans to organize local rides for cyclists of all skill levels and provide educational resources on safe riding practices both on campus and in the city. As operations expand, a lead mechanic position is currently open to the public, offering a chance for community involvement.

This new facility coincides with the expansion of Georgia Tech’s cycle track, further supporting the vision of a more eco-friendly campus. “The more we can help foster relationships between riders and create a space for repair and education, the more this becomes a win-win for all,” Joing emphasized.

As cycling becomes an increasingly vital part of campus life, the bike shop stands ready to assist the Georgia Tech community, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the benefits of riding without the hassle of repair issues.
