UPDATE: As New Year’s Eve approaches, officials in Fresno, California are urging partygoers to prioritize safety and plan ahead. With the last day of the year being one of the busiest for bars, risks increase significantly, prompting urgent calls for caution.

Bar owner Lewis Everk describes New Year’s Eve as “amateur hour,” where casual revelers flood the nightlife scene. He emphasizes that if patrons feel unsafe at any point, they should immediately notify bar staff. “If anytime they feel unsafe, just notify one of us,” Everk stated, highlighting the importance of community vigilance during celebrations.

In a significant shift, California state law now mandates that all bars must stock Naloxone, also known as NarCan, along with drink testing kits to detect potential spiking. While officials see this as a step forward, they stress that relying solely on these measures is insufficient. Clovis Police Sgt. Sean O’Brien advises, “Let people know where you’re going, when you plan to arrive, when you plan to leave.”

Safety extends beyond awareness; securing safe transportation is crucial. Authorities recommend arranging rides ahead of time, whether through friends or rideshare services. O’Brien noted, “All of them have safety precautions in place to verify who the driver is. Double check that information.”

Bar owners across Fresno are dedicated to ensuring patrons’ safety by cutting off those who appear intoxicated. “I’d rather have somebody mad at me for cutting them off than have to know that they didn’t make it home,” Everk emphasized, underscoring the human impact of responsible service.

As the countdown to midnight begins, the message is clear: prioritize safety, plan ahead, and celebrate responsibly. With the potential for increased crowds and heightened risks, these reminders are crucial for a fun and secure New Year’s Eve. Stay vigilant, stay safe, and enjoy the festivities responsibly.
