Niagara County Prepares Early to Prevent Rock Salt Shortage

UPDATE: As winter approaches, Niagara County is taking decisive action to avert a repeat of last year’s rock salt shortage that left many communities scrambling during heavy snowfalls. Highway departments across the county are ramping up their preparations, ensuring they have adequate supplies well ahead of the first major storm.

In Wheatfield, Highway Superintendent Paul Siegmann reports that their early measures last winter helped them avoid running out of salt, but just barely. “We were fortunate that we had enough in stockpile that we didn’t run out. We did get close,” he stated. When nearby towns faced severe shortages, Wheatfield collaborated with neighboring municipalities to keep major roads clear, showcasing a strong community response.

With winter looming, Richard Sirianni, Superintendent of Niagara County’s Department of Highways and Parks, revealed that they have already ordered hundreds of additional tons of rock salt to create a safety net for the upcoming season. He explained, “If I needed 500 tons, they’d send me 200 and spread it around for everybody.” This year, they are taking no chances.

Authorities are proactively ensuring that towns throughout the county, including North Tonawanda, are well-stocked. “Our 12 towns in the county, and even some of the cities like North Tonawanda, if somebody was totally out of salt, we would share salt with them,” Siegmann added, emphasizing the collaborative spirit in preparation for winter.

Both superintendents confirmed that, at present, there are no indications of a supply shortage. However, they urge residents to remain patient and give snow plows the space they need to operate effectively once winter weather hits. “We’re as prepared as we could be,” Sirianni stated, highlighting the county’s commitment to community safety.

Winter is fast approaching, and local officials are keeping a close eye on the situation. I have reached out to Governor Kathy Hochul‘s office and American Rock Salt to inquire whether any adjustments to the state’s supply or distribution plans are forthcoming in light of last year’s challenges.
