UPDATE: Day one of early voting in New York City’s 2025 general election has concluded with an impressive 79,409 voters casting their ballots on Saturday, according to the New York City Board of Elections. This marks a staggering increase compared to just 15,418 early voters on the first day of early voting in the 2021 mayoral election.

In a striking display of civic engagement, 24,046 residents in Manhattan participated, surpassing the total for the entire city from two years ago. Brooklyn and Queens also reported significant turnout with 22,105 and 19,045 early voters, respectively. The Bronx recorded 7,793 voters, while Staten Island logged 6,420 residents making their voices heard.

New Yorkers are weighing in on key positions, including the city’s next mayor, city comptroller, public advocate, borough presidents, city council members, and judges, depending on their locales. Additionally, voters in Brooklyn and Manhattan are selecting their district attorneys. Voters will also tackle six critical ballot questions, including a statewide question regarding state forest land and several inquiries focused on housing development. One notable proposal seeks to align the city’s election cycle with presidential elections by moving it to even-numbered years.

The nine-day early voting period runs through Sunday, Nov. 2. For more information on ballots and voting locations, residents can refer to Gothamist’s voter guide.

Across the river, New Jersey voters also kicked off early voting to select the next governor, with the race heating up between Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill and Republican Jack Ciattarelli.

As the election cycle unfolds, the surge in early voting signals heightened interest among voters, reflecting the critical issues at stake for New York City. Stay tuned for updates as we monitor the ongoing turnout and key developments leading up to Election Day.
