UPDATE: As the MLS playoffs commence, New York City FC is grappling with a troubling scoring drought as they prepare to face Charlotte FC on October 3, 2023. The team, which kicks off its playoff run in a best-of-three series, has only managed to score four goals in their last four matches.

The pivotal duo of Alonso Martínez and Hannes Wolf accounted for nearly half of NYCFC’s 56 goals during the regular season, but both players are struggling to find the back of the net in recent games. Martínez, who netted 17 goals this season, has not scored in his last three appearances. Wolf, who has also been quiet since September 17, is dealing with “physical issues,” raising concerns about his performance.

Martínez, however, remains optimistic. Speaking through an interpreter, he stated, “I think it’s been the schedule, the fact that I’ve been away with [Costa Rica’s] national team. Before that, I went on a streak of scoring in five matches. Not too worried about that, the goals will come.”

Head coach Pascal Jansen echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that both players have shown the ability to score in clusters throughout the season. He highlighted the need for the rest of the team to step up, particularly in set pieces, and stressed the importance of being the first team to score, noting that it significantly influences the game’s dynamics.

Adding to the tension, NYCFC aims to break a historical pattern as they seek their first win against Charlotte on the road. They will be facing a Charlotte squad missing star player Wilfried Zaha, who is suspended after receiving two yellow cards in their last match.

As the clock ticks down to kickoff, all eyes will be on NYCFC’s offensive strategy and the potential impact of their key players. With the playoffs set to start just hours away, fans are left wondering: can NYCFC overcome their scoring struggles and make a statement against Charlotte?

Stay tuned for the latest updates as this thrilling playoff matchup unfolds.
