UPDATE: Pardee Elementary School in Dearborn Heights, Michigan, has reopened today, following a brief closure due to an outbreak of hand, foot, and mouth disease affecting over 20 students last week. The school was shut down on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, as a precautionary measure to ensure the health and safety of students and staff.

The closure allowed for a comprehensive deep cleaning and sanitization of classrooms and common areas in response to the highly contagious viral illness. Parents and guardians were informed by Superintendent Mark Kleinhans in a letter explaining the situation and emphasizing the school’s commitment to safety.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease, which is particularly common among infants and children, presents symptoms including fever, mouth sores, and a rash with blisters. Superintendent Kleinhans stated, “The best course of action was to close the building and get it cleaned.” He reassured families that the school is now safe for students to return.

The Wayne County Health Department advises parents to practice good hand hygiene, implement proper sneezing techniques, and regularly clean toys and surfaces to help prevent further spread of the illness. Children exhibiting symptoms such as fever, draining sores, or mouth sores that hinder saliva control should remain at home and avoid group settings.

This urgent response highlights the ongoing efforts to maintain a safe environment for children amid health concerns. Parents are encouraged to remain vigilant and informed about the signs of hand, foot, and mouth disease.

For additional information on prevention and treatment, families can refer to local health resources. As schools navigate these challenges, the health and well-being of students remain a top priority.
